I didn’t choose to go inward.
The choice was made for me.
During the Pandemic when everything external became terrifying or disappeared entirely, the interior was the only place left to go. What I found there, and what I've been trying to understand ever since, is that most of us have been given almost no instruction on how to read ourselves. We know how to perform. How to produce. How to impress. But the private self, the one that knows things before it can explain them, largely gets left alone in the dark.
I started coaching because I wanted to help people with their creative work. What I actually ended up doing was something different. People would come in with a specific problem — a block, a decision, a fear — and we would almost always end up somewhere else entirely. Not because I redirected them, but because the specific problem kept pointing back to the same thing underneath: they were misreading their own interior. Once we built the foundation of seeing themselves correctly, the original problem either dissolved or became suddenly solvable. And then so did the next one, and the one after that.
“... most of us have been given almost no instruction on how to read ourselves.”
That pattern changed how I understood the work I was doing. And eventually it changed how I understood myself.
When I realized I was writing a book and not just indulging in a hobby, something shifted. I started taking my own interior seriously in a way I hadn't before. I had to confront and understand what was really there; the writing demanded it. Discipline, rhythm, integration, the specific texture of my own strangeness — these stopped being abstract concepts and became things I had to face and understand in order to keep going.
That is still the work I'm doing. The coaching, the writing, the community work, the cultural matchmaking, it all comes from the same place. A conviction that the interior life is not decorative. That it is, in fact, the most consequential thing a person carries. And that learning to read it correctly changes everything.
